Every winter season, many teachers look for a special tune for their big concert. That's why we have created these six distinctive selections for your recorder programs.
Each of these arrangements has two soprano parts, one harder and close to the melody and one easier, either just requiring B, A, G, C or just B, A, G. In addition, all of the tunes have an optional part for alto recorder. From the pages of Music K-8 magazine and Recorder Classroom, A Joyous Season For Recorders includes:
Joyous Prelude - This symphonic prelude is based on J. S. Bach's striking "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." For our arrangement, we have three recorder parts: a soprano part that plays mainly the melody of the sustained section, using D, G, A, B, C, and D'; an optional soprano part that can be played with only G, A, and B; and an optional alto recorder part using G, C, D, E, F#, and G'.
Finlandia - A Hymn To Winter - Finlandia is a symphonic poem written by Jean Sibelius. While this work is complex, it has been nicely adapted for recorder. It's set for two soprano recorders (one easy and the other, a bit harder) and for an optional alto recorder. Soprano 1 requires low D, G, A, B, C, D', and E' (optional); Soprano 2 only requires G, A, B, and C; and the alto part calls for B, C, D, E, and G. Of course, it can be convincingly played just using the easiest, part 2, or any combination of the parts.
Saga Of The Three Ships - This unique performance piece can be played by even young, beginning players. The arrangement itself is a study in contrasts. The orchestra ebbs and flows until the recorders enter to play the melody in a slow quarter note fashion, instead of the traditional 6/8 version, making it accessible for beginners. Part 1 uses the notes D, E, G, A, B, C, and D'. Part 2 uses the notes G, A, B, and C. There's also an optional alto recorder part using A, B, C, D, and E.
Quest Of The Three Kings - Our arrangement of "We Three Kings Of Orient Are" is set for full orchestra with three recorder parts: two sopranos and one alto. The first soprano part stays close to the melody using the notes D, E, F#, G, A, B, C, and D', while the second optional part requires only G, A, and B. The alto part is suitable for a beginner alto player and uses G, A, B, C, D, E, and G'.
Ode To Joy -Our carefully crafted arrangement lets your more advanced students play the melody using G, A, B, C, low D, and high D, while your younger players are only required to play B, A, and G. There is also an optional alto recorder part.
